INTRODUCTION : Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients frequently
suffer from continuous respiratory symptoms such as mainly dyspnea and, therefore,
experience substantial limitations in their daily life despite their care.
Objective: Assess the relationship of health related life quality (HLQ) and adherence
to bronchodilators in a group of COPD patients.
METHODS : It was a cross sectional study including 26 COPD patients treated by
bronchodilators (short and long acting β2 agonists and inhaled corticosteroids). They
answered two questionnaires: COPD assessment test (CAT) to evaluate their HLQ and
GIRERD questionnaire to evaluate their adherence to treatment. Pearson product-
moment correlation coefficient (r) evaluated CAT and GIRERD scores correlation.
RESULTS : Mean age was 66 ± 9 years and 96% were males. In this study, 12%, 19%,
50% and 19% of the patients had GOLD stages 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Mean CAT
and GIRERD scores were 19 ± 7 and 2 ± 1, respectively. Only 27% of the patients were
good adherent to their bronchodilators and 50% had severe HQL (CAT scores > 20).
There was a statistically significant correlation between CAT and GIRERD scores (p=
0.027 and r= 0.434).
CONCLUSION : The lack of bronchodilator adherence in COPD patients seems to
generate negative effects on their perceived physical well being, which impairs their
HQL.
